Abstract
In English, a well-known example of stress-timed language, stress shift occurs when the two first stresses appear in a row and thus clash. Avoiding dichotomy between application and non-application of stress shift rules, this paper looks into patterns of English quadrisyllabic stress shift based on the Buckeye Corpus of Conversational Speech. Regarding stress shift at an interval of four syllables, more than 90% of the data underwent stress shift in terms of at least one criterion among the three, intensity, pitch and vowel duration among which pitch was most prominent. As for stress shift of a two-syllable interval, 100% of the data experience stress shift, which implies that stress shift is very crucial in English. Unlike four-syllable interval cases, however, intensity was the most salient feature of stress shift. Neither of the stress shift types show any statistical differences between genders, and between ages.
