Abstract
Yong-ju Lee’s film Architecture 101, a romantic melodrama about first love, is the stories of Seo-yeon, the heroine, not those of Seung-min, the guy. This is not just because Seo-yeon opens and closes the film but more importantly because the film is about her escaping from the triangular relationship with an old man and a young man. An exploration of the psychological reasons behind Seo-yeon’s roaming between a father figure and a young lover will be conducted along with a psychoanalytic investigation of Ophelia’s refusal of Hamlet in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Both Seo-yeon and Ophelia are suffering in a triangular relationship but their endings are contrasting and these dissimilarities stem from the difference of the genres they are set in.
