Abstract
The investigation dealt with the fabrication of beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) coating layer on titanium through electrochemical reactions using micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. For this purpose, MAO coatings of titanium samples were carried out in the electrolyte containing hydroxyapatite (HA) particles together with various concentrations of tripotassium phosphate (K3PO4). After MAO coating, the average size of the micropores increased as the concentration of K3PO4 increased since higher concentration of K3PO4 might trigger the electrophoretic migration of HA particles incorporated into the coating layer. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the sample coated in the electrolyte with 0.2M K3PO4 exhibited the peaks of beta-TCP and TiO2 compounds, whereas the other samples showed alpha-TCP, HA and TiO2 compounds. This phenomenon was discussed by taking the micro-arc temperature during MAO coating into account.
