- This paper compares ‘figure and ground’introduced by Talmy from gestalt psychology and ‘trajector and landmark’proposed by Langacker based on conceptualization and construaloperation. Over the past few decades, a lot of studies have beenconducted based on these notions, and it has been generally acceptedthat these notions are almost the same or correspond to each other.
However, the ideas seem to lack legitimacy since there exist discrepanciesbetween Talmy’s and Langacker’s in some specific cases. For thisreason, this paper aims to refute the views that figure-ground alignmentis the same as trajector-landmark one by presenting evidence sentencesand elaborate why it is justified from the following: simple/ complexsentence, active/passive voice and information value. Besides, this paperwill provide a unified account of different construals between Talmy’sand Langacker’s which collide in the same event
