Abstract
The East Asian countries had a long history of great art culture and developed their own aesthetic consciousness. In spite of that, there were little distinguished studies on eastern aesthetics. The reason is that eastern way of thinking is different from that of western, the analytic and systematic traits. In the new millenium, we need a more integrated and higher aesthetics based in a global perspective. We should solve various tasks grounded on the conviction that diversity and universality, eastern and western culture, moreover human being and nature could coexist and compensate each other. It is expected to find the wisdom to answer these questions in eastern traditions. The eastern aesthetics has preserved some common and lasting characteristics in its basis. The origin of world and self was Tao(道). The learning has been considered as a means to live well in human society, and the scholarship is connected deeply with the realm of morals and education. The aesthetic tradition of human cultivation flows through, and the concepts such as ‘artistic way’(藝道), ‘courtesy and music’(禮樂), ‘literati’(文人), ‘elegant way of life’(風流), and ‘care of health’(養生) form the foundation of it. The artistic activity aims at depicting the originality of the artist's life in shape and expressing artist's own awakening of Tao. The beauty is not only universal which all the human beings hold in common, but also particular in that it shows different aspects depending on period, nation and environments. Here, I would like to suggest the concepts of ‘absence’ and ‘reverse-absence’ in order to enlarge the methodological thinking for the study of Korean arts and aesthetics. Absence is a viewpoint that the thing of others doesn't exist for us. Reverse-absence is a viewpoint that the thing of ours does exist also for others. Generally speaking, the globalization means to push forward the freeing of market from economic viewpoint founded on the rout of western capitalism. While in the East Asia, there has been an ideal in human society, that is the Confucius' theory of ‘Great Unity’(大同) society which is the idea of establishing the moral identity and restoring the human's good nature with practicing a generous administration. Our avarice devoted to the pursuit of wealth might change the earth into the ‘Little Temporary Lull’(小康) society. The fundamental solution of this problem could be sought for in the Confucian theory of Great Unity to realize truly the peace for all mankind.
