Abstract
Translation studies should be useful, topical, and current to benefit future translators. In this sense, research on the cultural elements necessary for accurate translation could be valuable since these elements are very difficult to translate in any language. In this thesis, I classified the cultural elements in Shifu, You Will Do Anything for a Laugh(a modern Chinese novel, written by MoYan, the winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature), into terms related to appellation, tradition and daily life, political and social systems, and idioms. Furthermore, I analyzed the translation strategies of these four types of cultural elements. Chinese and Korean are different types of languages, but both languages use Chinese characters. It makes dealing with the cultural elements in Chinese a little easier when translating into Korean. Nevertheless, we need to keep in mind that this is not always the case. Special attention should always be paid to homographs. Careful consideration should be given to not only the context, but the precise meaning of the words when dealing with the cultural aspects in translating between the Chinese and Korean languages.
