Abstract
Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)/poly(acrylonitrile)(PAN) blend film was prepared and the properties of the blend film were characterized to study the possibility of property improvement of PVA for reinforcing materials. From the patterns of wide-angle X-ray diffraction of the blend films, diffraction peaks from each polymer's crystal were not changed by blending, which reflects that there are no mutual influence in crystallization. The water contact angle on the blend film increased with increasing PAN content. The decrease rate of water contact angle of the blend film with elapsed time was smaller than the rate of PVA film. The melting temperatures of the PVA/PAN blend film only at the ratios of 99/1 and 97/3 were higher than that of pure PVA film. Thermal decomposition temperature and residual weight of blend films were increased with increasing PAN content, which shows the improved thermal stability by blending of PAN. Tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the film increased by blending and the PVA/PAN blend film containing 3 wt% of PAN showed the highest mechanical properties.
