Abstract
Advents of ubiquitous computing technologies and Ubiquitous Construction (UC) have gained the construction engineers’ attention on ZigBee technology. In UC environment, various wireless technologies exist in the area of physical measurement, assets monitoring, system controlling and security monitoring. However, it is possible to observe the frequency interference of wireless technologies at the similar bandwidth, resulting in signal degradation and communication loss. This paper analyzed the negative effect from the frequency interference of ZigBee with WiFi, Bluetooth, and Microwave Oven all of which are operated at 2.4GHz frequency. The experimental results indicate that simultaneous use of ZigBee with other wireless technologies at the same frequency range decreases signal strength, link quality, and packet reception rate if they are separated less than 1 meter. For microwave oven, however, serious loss of RF packets in ZigBee is observed even at the separation distance of 20 meters. Thus,it is important to carefully operate device’s channel setting and separation distance to minimize the negative effect of frequency interference.
