Abstract
A series of transparent polyimide (PI)/silica composite films were prepared from a sol-gel reaction using a thermal imidization process. The precursor solution for the composite films contained poly(amic acid) (PAA) and various amounts of (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GTMS) in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The chemical structure of PAA and PAA/silica composites was measured by H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The chemical structure and thermal stability of the PI/silica composite films were examined in detail by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The PI/silica composite films exhibited high thermal stability, and the degradation behavior was dependent on the amount of GTMS. In addition, the optical and thermo-mechanical properties of the films, such as the haze values, yellow indices and in-plane coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE), were investigated. The CTE values of the PI/silica composite films were 52.0-42.6 ppm/degrees C depending on the amount of GTMS used. The haze values and yellow indices increased with increasing GTMS concentration. Optically-transparent PI/silica composite films were obtained with a GTMS content of up to 10 wt.%.
