Abstract
New methods for the synthesis of tetracalcium phosphate (Ca₄(PO₄)₂O, TTCP) were proposed to obtain the high purity TTCP and better cementing properties, compared to a conventional dry milling method (TTCP-a). Newly proposed methods (TTCP-b and c) were integrated a wet process to the conventional process for the preparation of crystalline TTCP powders. The TTCP purity of the TTCP-b method was over 99wt% as about the same as the conventional TTCP-a, but the TTCP purity of the TTCP-c method was around 90wt%, which is the lower compared to the conventional TTCP-a method. In order to examine the cementing properties, Na₂HPO₄ with 0.5mol, 0.75mol,and 1mol solution and distilled water were used as a cement hardener. The result showed that the setting time was longer according to the hardener Na₂HPO₄ concentration in the cement-a (with TTCP-a). However, in cement-b (with TTCP-b) and cement-c (with TTCP-c), the setting time was shorter with the hardener Na₂HPO₄concentration. Specially, the cement-c showed the fastest setting time among the samples. It is believed that higher HA content in the starting TTCP-c powder affects the precipitation or nucleation for HA phase because a small amount of HA in TTCP powder acts as a seed material and accelerates the reaction with the hardener.
