Abstract
This paper defines Robert Penn Warren's southerness and examines his attempt to transcend the boundary of the south toward wholeness or synthesis of perspectives. Like the verse of the best Southern poets, Warren's poems reveal certain distinguishing characteristics: a recurrence of southern subjects; a penchant for order and control; a fondness for conservative forms and techniques; and a preference for the visually concrete and aurally sensuous image over abstract meditation. In addition, his poems show a belief in human imperfection; the importance of history and the past; a conviction that nature is mysterious and contingent; and the necessary role of the violence in nature to the process of human regeneration. At the same time, however, they aspire to transcend their time and place and achieve wholeness or synthesis of perspectives. Warren is eager to appreciate the difficulty of moral definition, the doubleness of experience, in other words, 'the irony of history'.
