Abstract
Attention and expectations given to born-global small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and export-oriented SMEs internationalizing step by step has been persistently increasing. In spite of the limited resources, increasing numbers of such export-oriented SMEs have successfully entered into global markets and then considerably improved their performances. Nevertheless, there are only a few empirical studies regarding determinants related to characteristics and internationalization of such firms. Based on a survey of 317 born-global SMEs, this study used characteristics of organizations, environments, and technologies as determinants affecting their international outcomes. It also devised 24 hypotheses concerning these determinants, the outcomes of internationalization, and partnership building between third-party logistics (3PL) providers having logistical competencies and export-oriented SMEs and then schematized a study model based on them. From the testing of the above hypotheses, it was found that among the organizational characteristics of export-oriented SMEs, only innovation-oriented culture and export-related information management have exerted positive (+) influences significant to the outcome of internationalization. All subordinate determinants of the environmental characteristics such as overseas environment, local environment, export support policy, and export financing support appeared to exert positive (+) influences significant to the outcomes, though only the level of IT utilization and standardization among the technological characteristics showed positive (+) influences significant to the outcomes. In addition, the study tested whether partnership building with logistics outsourcing providers having digital logistical competencies would control the relationships between determinants of internationalization and their outcomes. The results showed that only the following could modulate the relationships between determinants of internationalization and their outcomes: an interaction term among innovation-oriented culture, research and development competency, and logistics network competency; an interaction term among local environment, export policy support, export financing support, and logistics network competency; and an interaction term among technological competency, level of IT utilization, and logistics network competency The above result indicated that the building of successful partnerships with 3PL providers having digital logistical competencies are important to successfully internationalize and to improve the performance of export-oriented SMEs.
