Abstract
It is well-documented that English is a stress-timed language, and that rhythm achieved by regular occurrences of stress plays a crucial role in English phonology. In order to maintain this regular rhythm, English tends to avoid a stress clash by means of a stress shift. This paper first deals with four different patterns of stress shifts in English and investigates how native speakers of English and Korean learners of English differently realize stress shifts in the four patterns. For the purpose, we measure pitch, duration and intensity of the stressed vowel using Praat and analyze them statistically. Based on the phonetic and statistical results, we explore how patterns of stress shifts by Koreans are different from the ones by native speakers and which patterns among the four are more prominent in terms of pitch, duration and intensity.
