Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of 20 weeks dance therapy on cognitive function and dynamic balance in female students with mental retardation. A total of 23 subjects registered in integrated middle school classes were assigned to experimental group (n=12) or control group (n=11) through the method of random sampling. The dance therapy of the experimental group was composed of 45 minutes dance sport activities; 3 times a week for 45 minutes for 20 weeks. Before and after the experiment, the cognitive functions and the dynamic balance of the two groups were measured. The result of Analysis of Covariance using the pre-test values as covariate variables revealed that there was significant group differences in the cognitive function (p<.05) and the dynamic balance (p<.05). It was concluded that dance therapy has positive effects on cognitive function and balance in mentally retarded juveniles.
