Abstract
This paper discusses transfer of the first language phonology with regard to various types of manner assimilation. Specifically, it examines the influences of Korean phonology on the production of a lateral in consonant clusters of English words. The phonological processes that are investigated include l-nasalization, n-lateralization and t-lateralization in a consonant sequence and nasalization of a non-coronal obstruent-lateral sequence. Seven types of production experiments are performed with Korean learners of English who are placed into three groups depending on their level of proficiency, and with a control group consisting of native speakers of English. The results provide evidence for phonology transfer by Korean learners of English with respect to illicit consonant sequences over a syllable boundary. The results also suggest the acquisition of English phonology is the process of demoting high-ranking markedness constraints ranked low in English.
