Abstract
The current study examined how cities use their websites to fulfill public relations goals by setting two study goals. First, we content analyzed sampled city websites in the United States in three categories: information provider functions, site usability, and interactive communication. Second, we compared and contrasted city characteristics with web content to look at how the success of city performances was linked with sites’ PR items. An analysis of 125 city websites found that cities sampled were well structured in information provider functions and usability to fulfill PR goals but limited in interactive communication. Findings on a comparison of city traits and website content indicate that cities inferior in offline performances use content items on the web more often than cities superior in the performances as an opportunity to expect better connections with citizens.
